When Death Occurs

The death of a loved one is never easy, whether anticipated or not. Depending on where the death occurs and the circumstances, here are some guidelines to follow:

Anticipated Death at Home

In the case of terminal illnesses, usually the family elects to make pre-arrangements with us to minimize being overwhelmed with all the important decisions that arise when death occurs. More and more, people with terminal illnesses are electing to die at home under hospice care. If you notify the hospice that you have chosen Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home to handle the arrangements, we will take care of all necessary requirements.

Unanticipated Death

An emergency call to 911 should be made in this situation. Police and emergency medical personnel will determine the appropriate steps to take. The police can release your loved one directly to Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home at your direction. However, in some cases, the deceased may need to be sent to the Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death. Once completed, we pick up your loved one for preparation according to your directions.

Death in an Institution

The medical staff at a hospital or nursing home should take of of all necessary steps when a death occurs. You just need to sign any necessary release paperwork and notify them that Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home will handle the arrangements.

Out of State Death

Even when a death occurs outside the Washington, DC metropolitan area, Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home can assist you.
