On March 31st, 2023, Theresa Ann Sommerville, a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, transitioned to Heaven peacefully at her home, surrounded by family. Theresa was born in Alexandria, Virginia on May 1st, 1944. She moved to St. Mary’s County, Maryland where she grew up with her late mother, Katie Mungo Bland, her three sisters, Loraine Carey, Alice Clark, and Iris Fay Bland and one brother, Edward Clark Sr. Later in life, Theresa discovered she also had additional sisters from her birth father, Pearl, of District of Columbia and Marie of South Carolina.
In 1960, Theresa Ann married at the age of 16 to her late husband, Robert Sylvester Sommerville of Loveville, Maryland. Theresa and Robert were married for 55 years and together they raised three children.
Theresa worked for the St. Mary’s County Public Schools for over 40 years as a special needs bus driver, which she loved greatly. Theresa drove five different buses throughout her time with the Board of Education – 184, 109, 209, 200 and 229. She was very well loved and known for her straightforward attitude with everyone, and she had a sense of humor like no other. She would definitely let you know how she felt about you right away and she meant it. Theresa was always there for everyone, and she always tried to help no matter what. She would give you her last dollar if you needed it. She wasn’t just a mother, grandmother or great grandmother or aunt or sister, she was the greatest friend you could ever have.
She spent her retirement doing exactly what she wanted to do; hitting the road and visiting her sisters. Theresa was very fond of taking her great grandkids to every and any restaurant they wanted to go to. She was always playing video games with all of us and she really enjoyed having fun with her family.
Theresa leaves behind her four loving daughters, Diane Parker, Sheila Ann Sommerville, Mary Magdiline Maddox (Sommerville); a beloved son, Robert Sylvester, Jr. (Bobby) and a step-daughter, Tonya Elizabeth Dyson. She also leaves behind her three grandchildren, Letisha Ann Maddox, Mary Marie Fustino (Carlo), and Angel Milburn; three great grandchildren, Tashana Maria Fustino, Kalashia Alexandria Armstrong, and Lamont Anthony Armstrong. She also will be missed by the many nieces and nephews she cared for.
Family and friends will unite on Thursday, April 13, 2023 for visitation from 10 am – 11 am; service from 11 am – 12 noon at St. Mark UAME Church, 45685 Happyland Road, Valley Lee, MD 20692. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.
