Family and friends will unite On Saturday, April 23, 2011 from 10 a.m. until time of service 11 a.m. at the National Church of God, 6700 Bock Road, Ft. Washington, MD. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.

Ruth Ann Smothers, wife of Birchard (Bobby) Smothers and the daughter of the late David and Georgia Cunningham Simpson, was born January 15, 1943 in Eastover South Carolina. She departed this life on April 17, 2011, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia S.C.

Ruth spent the early years of her childhood in South Carolina and at the age of fifteen she moved to Washington D.C., where she lived with her Aunt Clotel and Uncle Glover until she married her husband Bobby and moved to the suburbs of Maryland, where she worked and lived with her family for more than forty years. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother. After her retirement, she returned to South Carolina, where she enjoyed being with family, reading, gardening and attending church. She was a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist church and affiliated with many other churches in the community. Ruth was the oldest of eleven children and was relentless in her effort to past on the history of her family. She was always willing and ready to set the record straight about the family lineage.

Ruth was preceded in death by her daughter, Rayna Denise Everett Smothers; a brother, James Cunningham and a sister, Joyce.

She leaves in God’s care her beloved husband, Birchard (Bobby) Smothers, her son, Reginald Smothers; six sisters, Lula Buck of Ft. Washington Md., Rhunett Green of Eastover S. C., Mattie Billie of Ft. Washington Md., Myrtle Pankey, Deborah Quico, Karen Cunningham all of Accokeek, Md.; three brothers, Willard Cunningham of Hopkins, S.C. Dwight Young of Gadsden, S.C., Clarence Cunningham of Ft. Washington Md.; two aunts; Pauline Cunningham and Willie (Joan) Cunningham; three brother-in-laws, George, Robert and Joe Smothers, all of Baltimore Md.; two sister-in-laws, Zettie Leftridge of Washington D.C., Pattie Jones of Silver Spring Md., and a host of brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends who all love her and will miss her.
