Ruben Henry Banks, Sr. entered into eternal rest on June 29, 2023 at Independence Court Assisted Living. Ruben was born on November 10, 1926 in Aroda, Virginia (Madison County) to the union of the late Edward and Irene Banks. He was one of nine children and spent his early years and schooling in Madison County.
In 1946, Ruben relocated to Washington, DC. During this time, he and Ruth Carey of Barboursville, VA, established a relationship and united in Holy Matrimony on April 6, 1947. From this union of 57 years of marriage, four children were born.
Ruben began his career working for the Coastline Cab Company. He drove a cab in the metropolitan area for 27 years. In the 1970’s, he went to work for the PG County School system as a Building Equipment Operator and retired from that job in 1989.
Ruben had various hobbies and interests. However, he really enjoyed mastering his outdoor skills. During his leisure time, he loved to go back to Virginia to hunt and went on many fishing trips with his buddies and family.
In 1964, Ruben joined Purity Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. H. Gibbs Hockett. He became a Deacon in 1982 and was a member of the Men’s Chorus, Circle No. I, Day Bible Study Class and the Men’s Bible Class. Under the leadership of the late Rev. Wingate, he began maintenance for the church and continued until he was no longer able to. He received many honors and recognitions from the church. In April, 2017, Ruben became Emeritus Deacon of Purity Baptist Church.
Ruben is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth; four grandchildren, Robert Douglas, Jr., Mariam, Ricki and Dorian Banks; six sisters, Frances, Dorothy, Edna, Ella, Helen and Anna, and two brothers, Seldon and Roy.
He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Gloria and Barbara Douglas; two sons, Ruben, Jr. and Roscoe Banks (Gertrude), all of Maryland; four grandchildren, Shahn Douglas, Carmen Parish (Donald), LaToya Banks and Andrew Banks; six great-grandchildren, Shahnice Evans, Shahn Micheal Jiles-Douglas, Mikhi Myles, Gwendolyn Voloschuk, Rickie Banks, and Keyonte Jackson, and one great-great grandchild, Ricky Griffin. In addition, he leaves five sisters and brothers-in-law, all of Virginia and a host of nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will unite on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 for visitation at 10:00am until time of service, 11:00am, at Purity Baptist Church, 1325 Maryland Ave NE, Washington, DC 20002. Interment will follow the service at Ft. Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, MD.
