At the age of 18, he registered for the Military Draft and later served in the Navy in the 1940s during World War II. After the Navy he worked as a brick mason. He was married to his late wife, Rosalie (Hall) Nelson on April 9, 1950 at St. Augustine Church in Washington, DC. The son of the late Walter Harrison Nelson and Lucy (Neale) Nelson, Richard is the last of their offspring. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Walter Nelson, John Nelson, Mary Milburn, George Nelson, Laura Lawson, Lucy Brown, and Grace Miles. Family and friends will gather at Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home, 2294 Old Washington Road, Waldorf, MD on January 28 from 12 noon until time of service at 1:00PM.
