
Family and friends will unite on Thursday, July 7, from 10 A.M. until time of service 12:00 noon at St. Luke United Methodist Church 12880 Point Lookout Road, Scotland, MD. Interment will follow after the service at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Major Herman Barnes son of the late Luke and Martha Barnes (Pap Pap and Nanny), was born September 8, 1929. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age in life.
Major received his education at Scotland Elementary, Jarborsville High School and attended college in Tennessee. In June of 1948, Major enlisted into the United States Army where he served for seven years with an honorable discharge. After the military, Major relocated to Washington, DC where he met and married the love of his life, Dorothy “Deans” Barnes (as he affectionately called her Darffee). From this union, seven beautiful children were brought into this world.
Through Major’s life he held several jobs, Custodian at Spring Ridge Middle School, Attendant at Shell Gas Station, Store Clerk at Brooks convenient store and Security Guard for Brandywine Sand & Gravel.
Major loved fishing with his brother Sylvester. He also enjoyed watching sports and was a die-hard Redskins fan.
On Friday, July 1, 2011 Major quietly departed this life at Halquist Memorial Center in Arlington, VA and began to embark on a journey with God that shall grant him eternal rest, everlasting peace, and tranquility. In addition to his parents Major was preceded in death by father & mother-in-law Thomas & Annie Deans, brothers Talifero Barnes & Billy Rogers, a sister, Marynina Barnes, a niece Mae Helen Bennett, and nephews Paul Johnson Jr. & William Smith Jr. He leaves his memory to be cherished by his loving wife Dorothy Barnes and children: Denise Barnes of Philadelphia, PA, Gregory Barnes (Marchelle), Michelle Howard (Richard) & Michael Barnes all of Wilson, NC, Bartt Barnes (Tullyne) of Chesapeake, VA & Brett Barnes (Karen) of Suitland, MD, 17 grandchildren: Jamal, Iesha, Gary, Mike Jr., Jasmine, Quandell, Toni, Quinton, Natosha, Johnny, Shakeya, Angela, Bartt Jr., Jessica, Tamaire, Trevon & Thomas, 4 great grandchildren: Tatiyana, Zachriah, Khloe & Saharah. He also leaves brother Sylvester Barnes & sisters Parthenia Smith of Scotland, MD & Lily Mae Hewlett of Ridge, MD; sister-in-laws: Elnora Ruffin of Philadelphia, PA & Lorraine Rogers of Bushwood, MD and a special niece Joan Barnes who stood by his side during his illness, providing special care to him and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and close friends.
