Kioka (Kiki) Deshawnta Bates was born on September 28, 1975, to Gail Young Butler and Larry Butler in Washington, D.C. She was called home to the Lord on March 24, 2011, following a long battle with diabetes.
Kioka was raised in Washington D.C. and Oxon Hill Maryland. She began her education at Oakville Elementary School in Saint Mary’s County, Md She later attended Saint Thomas More School in Washington DC , graduating from Oxon Hill High School in 1993. She also attended Prince Georges Community College.
She began working at the age of 14 at Gerard’s Bakery in Oxon Hill, Md. and was still employed at Steptoe and Johnson Law Firm in Washington, DC at the time of her passing.
Kioka enjoyed cooking and she often hosted holidays at her home welcoming family friends at their families. She enjoyed reading doing cross word puzzles and rarely watched T.V. except for an occasional movie night with the family.
Kioka met her husband Donald Bates, Jr. prior during her senior year in high school through a mutual friend Teashia Newsome, Teashia was tradgedly killed in a car accident a few days before their senior year in high school and Donald was to there comfort her and the rest is history. They were married on June 14, 1997 and were blessed with two children Jakari and Jasmin.
In addition to her parents, husband and children, Kioka is survived by her sister Tori Butler, brother Eric Barnes. Her mother and father in law Donald Sr. and Marilyn Faye Bates. Her stepmother Antoinette, Her brother and sister in law Sean and Tanya Bates, nieces and nephews Tashera Jane’, Rayven, Ebony, Carmen, Taylor ,Reginald and Troy, aunts, uncles and many other relatives and friends.
She has two special godmothers Delores Butler and Elaine Hancock (honorary) and her godfather Leroy Thompson.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents Joseph (Gibby) and Jane Young and Joseph and Marie Barnes.
