Kathleen Vernessa James, departed this life and peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Christmas Day, December 25, 2020. Kathleen, also known as Vanny, was born on February 10, 1960 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and godmother. She was the fourth of 5 children and youngest daughter. She was raised in Diego Martin, Trinidad in which she attended Diego Martin Government School and trade school. At the young age of 8, she learned to cook and it became a passion of hers. Vanny can cook anything just by looking at the dish. In 1981, Vanny left Trinidad and traveled to America by way of New York, to embark on a chance of a better life. She migrated to Washington DC, where she then met Enyinna Akomah, whom she later married. The two welcomed their daughter, Janelle Akomah in 1984 and their son, Stephen Akomah in 1986. Anyone who knew Vanny knew that her two children were her pride and joy and she had a very special bond with them. She sacrificed so much to ensure that her children were provided for. During the time of raising her two children, Vanny obtained occupations which included home caregiver, personal assistant, customer service agent and food service manager. In 2008, unfortunately, Kathleen and Enyinna divorced, but was able to remain great friends. After 29 years of not returning to her birthplace, Kathleen visited Trinidad and saw longtime friends and family she had not seen in years. It was then she reconnected with her childhood sweetheart, Clyde Davis and they began to rekindle their relationship. The two got married in Trinidad on December 17, 2011. For the next 9 years, Kathy (as Clyde will call her) would fly between Trinidad and Maryland to be with her family. They both shared a love for the Lord, food and music and would constantly talk all day when not physically with each other. Unforeseen health issues would arise and Kathleen became ill in January 2020, where she was hospitalized for 3 months. After her hospital stint, Kathleen lived with her daughter, Janelle in Upper Marlboro, MD. There her daughter and son would provide care for her. Even during her sickness, she continued her daily routine with Clyde and watched and played with her grandchildren, Trace and Zariah. Due to COVID travel restrictions, Clyde and Kathy were unable to see each other but that did not stop or hinder the love they had and showed one another. Kathleen was preceded in death by her father, Nathaniel James; mother, Dorcas Durant; brother, Carlos James; mother-in-law, Uriel, and brother-in-law, Keith. She is survived by her children, Janelle and Stephen; her husband, Clyde Davis; her stepdaughter, Cavelle; her siblings, Annette, Edgerton, and Chin; her grandchildren, Trace and Zariah; her longtime friend and father of her children, Enyinna; her nieces and nephews, Sudana, Dwayne, Javon, Stacy and others; her son-in-law, Antonio; her sisters-in-law, Dawn, Edith, Meg, and Bridget; brother-in-law, Shurland and a host of family and friends. On Wednesday, January 6, 2021, visitation will be from 3:00 pm – 4:00 p.m. with services from 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home, 2294 Old Washington Rd, Waldorf. MD.
