James Edward Carroll, 76, of Lexington Park, Maryland, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2023, at the Hospice House of St. Mary’s in Callaway, Maryland, with his daughter Yvonne by his side, after a short fight with Parkinson’s.
He was born on June 22, 1946, to Sarah Carroll Chase. He was affectionately known as “Jim or Jimbo” and “Grandpop or Pop-Pop” to his grandchildren. He received his education from St. Peter’s Claver Elementary School and Cardinal Gibbons High School. He worked as a custodian for St. Mary’s College of Maryland for 38 years until retiring in 2002.
James Edward was united in holy matrimony to Margaret “Peggy” (Fenwick) Carroll on June 24, 1967. From this union, they were blessed with three children: Michael, Yvonne, and Melvin. They celebrated 39 years together prior to Peggy’s passing on October 31, 2006.
Jim was a caregiver for many of his family members. As a young boy, he cared for his grandparents, and that compassion, patience, and devotion for the love of his family continued as he cared for his late aunt Lucy, aunt Virginia, aunt Helen, and uncle Paul, making sure they got the care they needed. They loved their nephew Jim dearly and were so grateful to have him in their lives until they passed away, prior to Jim’s death. Jim gave himself unconditionally and knew the importance of respecting his loved ones’ abilities.
In his leisure time, Jim enjoyed playing cards, watching sports and westerns, and spending time with family and friends. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, Jim was a manager and player for the St. James Angels’ softball team. He was a lifelong member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, St. Mary’s City, Maryland.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his children, Yvonne Brooks (Eric Sr. “Tony”), Melvin Carroll, Sr. (Wendy), and Michael Fenwick, Sr. (Beverly); grandchildren, Eric Jr., Troy, Melvin Jr., Marcus (Emah), Takiera (Raymond), Travis (Maria), Michael Jr., Alexus, and Renee; great-grandchildren, Sade’, Deric, Erianna, Zoe, Tamia, Tyler, Terrell, Nasir, and Isaiah; mother, Sarah Chase; three sisters, Elizabeth Carroll, Phyllis Chase, and Barbara Lee Chase; one brother, Raymond “Puddin” Chase; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, godchildren, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret “Peggy” Carroll; sister, Dorothy Chase; grandparents, Douglas and Grace Carroll; aunts, Lucy Dudley, Virginia Porter, and Helen Robinson; and uncles, Augustus, Charles, Tolbert, John Francis Sr., Thomas, and Paul Carroll.
Family and friends will unite on Friday, February 10, 2023 for visitation at 10 am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 47950 Mattapany Road, St. Mary’s City, MD 20686. Interment will follow at St. James Cemetery, St. James Road, Lexington Park, MD 20653.
