James Clayton Butler

On Friday, January 10, 2020, our beloved James Clayton Butler, affectionately known to most as “Clayton” and “Junie Boy” entered into eternal life. Clayton was born in Chaptico, MD on January 22, 1938 to the late Grace and James Clayton Butler , Sr. He was educated in the St. Mary’s County Public School System. On August 3, 2001, he married the love of his life, Carolyn E. Banks. From this union, a blended family of eight children were formed-Karen Wade (Anthony), of Mitchellville, MD, Kenard Butler (Debbie), of Capitol Heights, MD, Tisha Jones, of Waldorf, MD, Taunya Brown (Larry), of Edgewood, MD, Phyllis Dickens, of Lexington Park, MD, and Carolyn Chase (Santo), of California, MD.

Clayton was employed as a construction worker at various construction companies until his retirement in 2002.

He loved hunting and dancing with friends. Clayton especially looked forward to attending the annual Banneker High School reunion dances. He enjoyed sitting in his favorite chair, watching TV and looking out the window. We often teased him of being one of the neighborhood watch group because he did not miss much. His favorites to watch on TV were westerns and sports. He was a die-hard fan of all Washington D.C teams.

Clayton was preceded in death by his parents, Grace and James Clayton Butler, Sr.; his sons, James Kevin Butler, and Joseph William Banks; granddaughter, Karis Wade; sisters, Delores Bush and Helynn Lewis, and brothers, David, Joseph, and Theodore Butler.

Clayton leaves to mourn his loving and devoted wife, Carolyn; his children; loving sisters, Alberta “Bert” Johnson and Grace “Tootie” Lawrence, twenty-four grandchildren, thirty-six great grandchildren, special friends, Robert “Buddy” Short and Mitchell Curtis, and a host of family and friends.

Family and friends will unite on Monday, January 20, 2020 for visitation at 9:00 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 29119 Point Lookout Rd, Morganza, MD 20660. Interment to follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery, Helen, MD.
