Ian R. Tahtinen was born September 22, 1997 in Marquette, Michigan to his mother, Cherie Banks (Tahtinen). The night of his birth, his Godmother, Cindy Lachapelle and Michelle Sanford (Tahtinen), along with my mother, Linda Tahtinen, joyfully celebrated his entrance. Sadly, Ian Tahtinen was taken from us and given his angel wings on December 20, 2020. Ian started his life in Marquette, Michigan where we are originally from. We moved to Maryland when Ian was 6; just turning seven that fall. It was a tough transition, but we made it. We moved to the Waldorf area when Ian was entering 4th grade and have stayed in that area only having moved 3 times all within a mile radius. His most recent job of nearly two years at Burchmart gave him more confidence than all his years combined. Ian was a soft, gentle kind-hearted man; he was always told he had an old soul. I believe that’s what made him special. His life-long friends, Desmond McDowell, Stephen Lyonnais and Thomas Farmer have always been by his side. When with his friends, they would always just be at one another’s house. Thankfully, Ian wasn’t the type of son that gave any serious problems. Ian was our Angel on earth; taken to soon. His favorite team was Green Bay Packers and he loved gaming and anime. Ian leaves behind Cherie Banks (mother), Derrick Banks (step-father), brothers, Isaiah king and Ivan Somerville, Linda Tahtinen (grandmother), Michelle Sanford (aunt), Michael Sanford (uncle,) Michah Sanford (cousin,) Jim Tahtinen (uncle), Sandy Tahtinen (aunt), Tonya Washington (G-Ma) and Janice Goldring (Nana) and numerous cousins. On Tuesday, January 12, 2021, a Memorial Service will be held from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm at Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home, 2294 Old Washington Rd., Waldorf, MD.
Because of COVID restrictions, the family requests signing the online obit below. Live streaming starts at 3:00 pm https://youtu.be/R26Ck5tum2g

It was our pleasure to meet Ian a few summers ago on a family visit, he was such a funny, kind and totally memorable human being and we’re heartbroken that our relationship won’t be able to grow further. Our love goes out to Cherie, Derrick, Isaiah and Ivan as well as our other “yooper” family members. Rest in peace, dear one.
Ian
I miss you! This hurts but your an Angel I know . I know you can see us and your looking down on us! Take care of your mom , dad , brothers , grandma and auntie! So grateful for the time we spent!
My condolences to Ian’s family and friends. Ian was always a laid back kind hearted person . He cared for everyone no matter who you were . He was a gamer , he was a clown ( in a good sense ) in the sense that he liked to laugh and make others laugh as well , and most importantly he was always a friend . Ian may not have had the most friends but he never worried about that he always made the best of the friends he did have and the time he spent with them . He always looked out for his friends .
Ian, I light this candle for you today so that your spirit will continue to shine in the hearts of those that love you so dearly. You will never be forgotten and all the good times will remain with your family and friends forever. I know that God have already receive you with loving arms. R.I.P.
The easiest thing to do is to write about Ian. The hardest thing I ever had to do is to accept Ian has left us, although his spirit very much remains. I met Ian as a Freshman at McDonough High School, co-teaching in one of his classes. The reserved and polite young man quickly formed a bond with me, and worked hard on each assignment. This was no easy thing since it was LSN and all kids for the most part found it boring and long. But Ian plowed through and we made it happen. Ian was very protective of me, as I recall the anniversary of my Mothers passing I will never forget him demanding that I sit with him at his desk to make sure I was “ok.” Although I had other students, sitting alongside Ian was became a daily occurrence! He SAVED a seat everyday, which made the students declare that I “only liked Ian.” Ian didn’t back down, and always remarked to his peers that I was his favorite because he worked hard and listened. One thing I will I will never forget how considerate Ian was to both of his teachers in LSN class. What a beautiful, beautiful soul.
Ian you will never be forgotten, you made sure of that even with your short time with us. I promise to fight for justice and always stay near your Mom and siblings. I am sad to let you go, but I am honored to know you and grateful to God he allowed that time. Rest in the arms of our Lord. You will always be loved……
