Herbert Brown, Jr.April 17, 1933 – February 23, 2011A devoted son and brother, a phenomenal and nuturing father, a proud and caring grandfather, a committed uncle, a loyal friend and most importantly a child of God. Herbert Brown, Jr. quietly transitioned from labor to rest at his residence on Wednesday, February 23, 2011. Born in Birmingham, Alabama on April 17, 1933, Herbert was the son of the late Herbert and Cynthia Brown. As a young boy, the family relocated from Birmingham, Alabama in 1935 He received his education in the District of Columbia Public School System, a graduate of Armstrong Technical High School.His drive and determination to be self-sufficient led him to first seek employment with Ottenberg Bakery as a bakery helper in 1951. On February 7, 1952, Herbert’s desire to be of service to his country led him to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. He was extremely proud of his military service and earned an honorable discharge in 1960. Herbert entered into federal employment with the Bureau of Engraving and Printing while completing his obligation to the Marine Reserves on August 1, 1955. While employed with the Bureau, he received numerous awards of recognition for outstanding service. After 44 years of dedicated service, he retired in 1997. After his retirement, he devoted much of his time to cycling, bowling and volunteering at the community library.Herbert’s spiritual and religious growth began at home and continued at Brown Memorial A.M.E. Church. He served as an altar boy, boy scout, and a member of Senior Usher Board #1 during his youth. As an adult, he was a member of the Amanda J. Rogers Missionary Society, the Veterans Ministry and the A. J. Mattison Men’s Fellowship. He was faithful to his church family until his passing.He was a member of the Prince Hall Masonic Order and served as a member of the Orange Hats Patrol. Due to his high level of respect, dignity and wisdom, he was affectionately referred to as the “Mayor of Capitol Hill”.Many memories of his life will be forever cherished by his daughters, Angela, Saundra, Qiana ; God daughter, Marqui; sister, Roberta; his grandsons, Kaiyhan, Harry, Jr., Derrick, Jr. and the late Kinard Mack; seven great grandchildren; son-in-laws, Harry and Kenny; brother-in-law, Herman; niece, Cheryl and many friends.He lived completely…with dignity, humility and grace. In our hearts his wonderful spirit remains. He has left behind a great treasure of memories, a remarkable legacy and his enduring love.
