“Mother’s/Mommy’s Story”
Clarissa Jean Smith was born on March 25, 1948. She was the first of four children born to Thelma Luvenia “Gladden” and Edward Allen Smith SR. of Valley Lee, Maryland. She departed this earthly life Monday, January 23, 2023, at 3:30 A.M. at the Baptist Medical Center South Jacksonville, Florida.
Clarissa accepted Christ in her life, under the leadership of the late great Doctor Reverend Rudy C Brooks. A dedicated and faithful servant to our Lord, and to her church, St Mark UAME Church. Serving as Secretary, Pastor’s Steward, Vice President of Missionary, and member of the Magnolia Choir for a great number of years was a joy of her life. She found joy in bringing youth to and from Saturday school and planning youth activities. She loved her family, and her special bond with her younger brother, Michael and sister-in-love, Shirley, was unmatched. Her children and grandchildren were the apple of her eye. She loved to talk with family and friends about the bible and family history (she could hold her own bible study). She was a loving surrogate to many (so many to name; she loved them all)[ always willing to give a helping hand and motivation to many.
Clarissa earned her high school diploma from the St Mary’s County school system. Clarissa was a dedicated employee of Oakville and Lincoln Daycare Centers. Before retiring, she was employed as Child Care Welfare Clerk with the State of Maryland Department of Social Services. Clarissa enjoyed beating her family in playing Scrabble and watching Jeopardy.
She was pre-deceased in death by her mother, Thelma L Smith; father, Edward A Smith Sr.; daughter, Tyata Morgan; son, Robert E. Morgan Jr.; brothers, Edward A. Smith, Jr., Robert L Smith, and niece, Kimberly Briscoe.
She is survived by her brother, John M. Smith (Shirley); daughters, Bernadette L. Hawkins (Medgar), Lorraine M. Burke (Decato); son, Aaron D. Morgan, Sr. (Kimberly); grandchildren, Tyata Brown, Darius Hawkins, Marquise Hawkins (Maggie) KaNeisha Morgan, Aaron Morgan, Jr., Tiarre Morgan, Chantel Morgan, Mariah Morgan, Marcelis Somerville, Malik Somerville, Alissa Morgan, DeQuan Morgan, DeVonte Morgan and Anthony Rhodes, 13 great-grandchildren; nephew, Edward A. Smith lll; nieces, Charlene Ball, Ann Woodard (Richard), Tamiko Belcher (Lionel) and Denise Miles (Tony); one Godson, La Royce Jordan; two Goddaugthers, Tamiko Belcher and Toya Williams; special sister, Sadie Morgan, and special friends, Edith Jeffiers, Flouarine Brown, Iva Micheau and special daughters, Tonjia Cochran and Tia Bryant and a host of other relatives and friends.
Family and friends will unite on Monday, February 6, 2023 for visitation at 10 am until time of service at 11 am at First Missionary Baptist Church, 46370 Pegg Lane, Lexington Park, MD 20653. Interment to follow at St. Mark UAME Church cemetery, 45685 Happyland Road, Valley Lee, MD 20692.

In that great getting up morning, FAIR THEE WELL, FAIR THEE WELL. There’s a better day a coming, FAIR THEE WELL…. My MOMMY lived for this day. Her obedience and faith has been a great source of tolerance. Her faith right to the end of her earthly existence has made it such a tolerable loss. My heart is broken BUT I know that the life and my MOMMY’S steadfastness was not in vain. She spread her joy and sunshine ☀ to EVERYONE she met. THANK GOD FOR MOMMY! REST EASY MOMMY
