Carmella Brenda Smith

05ee9192 b689 4e65 b173 1535a82d2ed0

Carmella Smith, age 71, passed away peacefully and departed this life to be with the Lord on December 22, 2020, while at home with her family. She was born November 16, 1949 in Philadelphia, PA to Morris Jenkins and Margaret Crafton and was a graduate of Simon Gratz, High School in Philadelphia, Class of 1967. Carmella married her longtime friend and love, Jeffrey G. Smith, on August 30, 2003, who preceded her in death in 2019.

For many years, Carmella worked as a legal secretary at several of the largest law firms in Philadelphia and as an executive assistant at Wachovia Bank (now Wells Fargo).

Carmella was feisty, resilient, and blunt. People loved her because they never had to guess what she was thinking or where they stood with her. She got straight to the point. Carmella’s greatest passions were her love for Jeff, her children, her grandchildren, and Judge Judy. Everyone who knew Carmella knew not to call during Judge Judy. Carmella spoke with her children daily to provide them with “real talk” and love. She understood the personalities of each one of her grandchildren and made sure to give them support and guidance based on what each of them needed. Nana, as they all called her, was their biggest cheerleader.

Carmella fiercely believed in the importance of family bonds. She instilled in her children a duty to always look after and care for each other, no matter what. She often said things like: “You can’t go, unless you take your sister,” “Ya’ll better be speaking by tomorrow,” and “If something happens to me, look after your brother.”

Carmella is survived by her son Bruce Crafton, her daughters Bridgette Tillman (Brian) and Jennifer Moore (Kitab), her sisters Romona English and Karin Morrison and her brother Kevin Fenning; grandchildren, Cianni, Cydney, Corey, Miles, Channell, and Kiyon, her Aunt Mildred Major, cousins Sylvia Young and Debbie Mack, her nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and a host of others who will miss her dearly.

On Monday, January 4, 2021, visitation will begin at 9 am until time of service at 10 am at Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home, 2294 Old Washington Rd, Waldorf, MD. Interment to follow at Heritage Memorial Cemetery, 13472 Poplar Hill Rd, Waldorf, MD 20601.
